Smear Frame

This tutorial was written using PSP7, but can probably be done in earlier versions with a few adjustments.

** Remember to save your work often! **

1. Open the image you wish to frame, as well as your gold fill.  If you would like to use this image, right click and save to your computer.

2. Set your foreground color to white and your background to texture .  For the texture, choose your gold fill.

3. Add a new Raster Layer.  Flood fill with white.  Now change your foreground to a complimentary color from your image (I am using #DFB6B5).

4. Go to Mask - Load from Disk.  Browse to your masks folder and choose the "grainy.msk".  Go to Selections - From Mask.  Fill the selection with the color you have chosen.  Now Masks - Delete and click YES in the box that opens about merging.  Selections - Select None.  Layers - Merge - Merge All (Flatten).  You should have something like this:

5. Go to Image - Add Borders.  Make sure Symmetric is checked and 4 in each box.  Click on the new border with your Magic Wand Tolerence and Feather set to 0 and Sample Merged UNchecked.

6. Fill the selection with your gold fill.  Go to Selections - Invert.  Go to Effects - 3D Effects - Cutout and use these settings:

Color Black
Opacity 65
Blur 20
Vertical and Horizontal 2.

7. Repeat the Cutout, but change the Vertical and Horizontal to -2.  Selections - Select None.

8. Reverse your Foreground and Background so that your solid color is now the background.

9. Add a new border, this time with 12 in each box.  Click with your Magic Wand.  Go to Effects - Plugin Filters - Fantastic Machines - Paint Engine.  Choose "flakes" from the drop-down list of presets.  Selections - Select None.  (You should have this preset, but just in case you don't, here are the settings):

10. Reverse your colors again and add a new border of 4.  Fill with your gold fill.  Selections - Select None.

11. Reverse colors again and add a border of 20 (this will be the color you selected).  Apply the Paint Engine again with the same settings.  Keep selected and add a Cutout with these settings:

Color Black
Opacity 45
Blur 20
Vertical and Horizonal 2.

12. Repeat the Cutout but change the Vertical and Horizontal to -2.  Selections - Select None.

13. Reverse your colors one more time and add another border of 4.  Click with your Magic Wand and fill with your gold fill.  Selections - Select None.

14. Now for the decorations.  Open the corners2 font that was included in the zip file (this does not have to be installed).  Add a new layer.  Click on your Text Tool and set it up as in the image below:

15. Go to Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow and use these settings:

Color Black
Opacity 100
Blur 10
Vertical and Horizontal 0.

16. Selections - Select None.  Use your Mover Tool to move the decoration to the upper left corner of your image.

17. Go to Layers - Duplicate, then Image - Mirror.  Again to Layers - Duplicate, then Image - Flip.  Once more to Layers - Duplicate, then Image - Mirror.  This will place a decoration in each corner of your image.  Merge all layers and you're done.
