Gingerbread Man

This tutorial was written using PSP7, but can probably be done in earlier versions with a few adjustments.

** Remember to save your work often! **

1. Open a transparent image 400 x 400.  Set your foreground to Black.

2. Add a new Raster Layer (all layers will be Raster layers) and name it "body".  Load the "jd-gingerbreadman" selection (Selections - Load from Disk).  Flood fill with Black.  Go to Selections - Modify - Contract by 1.  Fill with #BF7731.  Keep selected.

3. Go to Effects - Texture Effects - Texture and use the settings below.  The preset numbers are not the same for everyone, but if you click on the little arrow (where I have the circle in the screen shot below) and hold your cursor over the presets, you will see the name of each one.  The one I used is "Granite".

4. Go to Selections - Modify - Expand by 1.  Then Selections - Float.  Go to Effects - 3D Effects - Cutout and use these settings:

Color Black
Opacity 65
Blur 25
Horizontal and Vertical 3.

5. Selections - Select None.  Add a new layer and name it "icing".  Change your foreground color to White.  Select your Paintbrush with these settings:

6. Paint some "icing" around the edges of the gingerbread man.  With your Magic Wand , Tolerence and Feather set to 0 and Sample Merged UNchecked, click inside the white "icing" to select it.  Go to Effects - 3D Effects - Inner Bevel and use these settings:

7. Add a new layer and name it "buttons".  Using your Selection Tool set to Circle and Antialias checked, draw a small circle and fill with white like below:

8. Add the same Inner Bevel as before.  Selections - Select None.

9. Go to Edit - Copy, then Edit - Paste as New Selection.  Do this until you have 4 buttons.   Selections - Select None.

10. Go to Effects - 3D Effects - Drop Shadow and use these settings:

Color Black
Opacity 35
Blur 5
Horizontal and Vertical 0.

11. Add a new layer and name it "face".  Go back to your Paintbrush; leave all settings the same as before, except change the size to 15.  Change your foreground color to #F4D0D0.  Click 2 times for his cheeks as shown:

12. Go to Effects - Blur - Gaussian Blur and use a radius of 1.00.

13. With your Selection Tool, draw a small circle for an eye.  Fill with Black and add an Inner Bevel using the Round preset from the Drop-down list.  Edit - Copy; Edit - Paste as New Selection and move into place.  Selections - Select None.

14. Make your background null .  Using your Draw Tool set to Freehand Line, Width 2, Antialias checked, draw a line for his mouth.

15. Layers - Merge - Merge Visible.  He is now ready to save as a tube (File - Export - Picture Tube) or in psp format for later use.
